Did you know, New Zealand is one of only two countries in the world (alongside America) which allows direct-to-consumer advertising for pharmaceutical drugs?

Let that sink in for a second. That means Pharmaceutical companies can freely bombard vulnerable New Zealand consumers with advertising for their latest drugs, with many then becoming household names. The point is to get consumers asking their doctors for drugs by name, rather than letting the doctor assess any illness and prescribe medication based on what they need, not what they have been brainwashed to want. “The truth is, direct-to-consumer advertising is used to drive choice rather than inform it,” says Dr Dee Mangin, associate professor at the Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Another thing to keep in mind is while big Pharma is advertising, they also are enticing doctors to prescribe their drugs by giving them ‘benefits’ such as holidays etc. We believe this corrupt cycle which is all based on profit needs to stop.
